Signature Cocktail #6: Black Pepper Kumquat Margarita

It’s margarita time! Today, our wedding wellness expert, Carlene Thomas of Healthfully Ever After, whipped up a sophisticated wintry margarita that entices with the pleasantly pungent flavor of kumquats, winter’s unheralded citrus gems, and a sprinkling of smoky black pepper. With sweet, tart, spicy, and citrusy notes in equal parts, this wonderfully complex and layered drink is an ideal signature cocktail choice for the chic and modern bride. Here’s Carlene with all the details.

Winter is the peak season for citrus. While you could buy oranges, it’s time to enjoy a petite and little-known fruit: the kumquat. Kumquats, including the skin, are 100 percent edible. They are tart like lemons but release an addictive sweetness as you chew. Put a spin on a traditional margarita with this little-used ingredient and a spicy dash of pepper on the rim of the glass. A black pepper kumquat margarita is the perfect signature drink for the bride with razor-sharp wit and a thoughtful heart.

Ingredients (makes 2):

  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 8 kumquats
  • 3 ounces tequila
  • 3 cups crushed ice
  • 1/2 cup sugar (to make simple syrup)
  • 2 ounces of Cointreau
  • 1 ounce of lime juice

Directions:

Moisten the rims of margarita or cocktail glasses with lime juice. Sprinkle salt and black pepper into a small bowl and dip the glass rims.

To make sweetened kumquats: Wash and puncture kumquats with a fork. Place in a small saucepan and cover with water. Bring the kumquats to a boil, and drain the water. Repeat the process twice. Once you have boiled and drained the kumquats twice, add more water and an equal amount of sugar. Allow the sugar to dissolve over heat with the kumquats. Set aside.

In a blender, finely crush the ice. Add to glasses with the salt and pepper rims. Add syrup and a few kumquats to the glass. In a cocktail shaker, add tequila, lime, and Cointreau. Shake and pour over the kumquat ice.

Andrea + Brian: A Cozy and Colorful Maryland Wedding by ZADesignz

We have a special place in our hearts for intimate weddings with vintage flair, and this charming, colorfully autumnal fête, held at a quaint private residence in Maryland, is no exception. The ladies of Serendipity Bridal & Events worked their event design magic to create an unforgettably romantic setting, and Zareth of ZADesignz was on hand to capture every vibrantly beautiful moment.

Like most brides and grooms, Andrea and Brian had a limited budget, so resourcefulness was key in making their dream day a reality. They scoured local thrift shops, yard sales, and even dollar stores to find unique items, such as lace linens, ornate candelabras, and colored Depression glass pieces, that suited their theme but didn’t cost a fortune. They also enlisted the help of family and friends to make the occasion as memorable and personal as possible. The results speak for themselves. “It was everything I wanted and more,” Andrea said.

From the Bride, Andrea

Brian and I both love vintage furniture, clothing, and decorative pieces, so having a vintage-themed wedding really suited our personalities. Brian’s mother and I started collecting old glasses right after we got engaged. We had from March until October to find 80 vintage glasses. We didn’t have a very large budget, so we had to find things that fit the theme but didn’t cost much. Scouring local thrift stores, yard sales, and even dollar stores for items such as lace, candleholders, and glass bowls helped us stay within our budget. I had my entire family on the hunt for anything vintage that would go with our theme. My mom found the old typewriter that we placed on our registry table online. We actually found an old chest and a vintage sofa on Craigslist. We got great deals on everything. We tried to select items that we would want to keep in our home after the wedding. The love seat and chest are pieces that we now use in our living room.

My family did a fantastic job helping. From the food to the decorations, everything was put together by family and friends. They made our day incredibly special. It was everything I wanted and more. My grandfather made the pumpkin dip for the ginger snaps, the pumpkin rolls, and the buttermilk pies. My father and stepmother put together all the appetizer trays, as well as made the baked beans and smoked salmon dip. My mother had two of her friends come over to help get everything ready for the wedding; they started decorating about two days beforehand.

The DJ was actually my high school prom date; he is a wonderful musician. I originally wanted white and cream-colored flowers, but after visiting with our florist, a family friend, I decided to go with every color in the rainbow.

Mood Board #55: Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Aside from eccentricity and a nameless cat, I have little in common with every girl’s favorite fictional Manhattanite—the charmingly enigmatic and effervescent Holly Golightly, of course! That doesn’t stop me from wanting to be frequently whisked away into her impossibly stylish world, or from listening to “Moon River” on repeat, much to the vexation of anyone within earshot. And that is precisely what I’m doing this Saturday morning. Here’s to you, Holly!

“What I found does the most good is just to get into a taxi and go to Tiffany’s. It calms me down right away, the quietness and the proud look of it; nothing very bad could happen to you there. ” ~ Holly Golightly, Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Mood Board #49: Across the Universe

Dreaming up a wedding filled with starry skies takes us back to our childhood nights, many of which were spent stargazing in the rugged mountains of Colorado, where there were no city lights to dim the celestial beauty of the night sky. And what’s more romantic than the mythologies of the constellations, the stories written in the stars? Take, for instance, the constellation Berenice’s Hair, which refers to the legend of an Egyptian queen who shore off her long, flaxen locks and offered them up to Aphrodite, the goddess of love, as payment for keeping her husband safe in wartime. Aphrodite carried the queen’s tresses up to the heavens, where they would remain for the rest of time.

It may be somewhat (okay, more than somewhat) impractical to have a nighttime wedding under the stars, but some brides have actually held their ceremonies in planetariums, with Chicago’s Adler Planetarium and Philly’s Fels Planetarium being popular choices. (Ah, nostalgia for all those planetarium field trips we took as kids suddenly sets in!) If you’re simply looking to incorporate a starry feel into your wedding, we love some of the paper elements in this board, including asymmetrical star place cards, cleverly inserted between fork prongs; constellation table cards; and a mesmerizing constellation seating chart, all created by our favorite calligrapher, Mara Zepeda of Neither Snow, for this Dunton Hot Springs wedding.

Here are some of our favorite starry-skied picks! We especially love this fresh rose constellation ceiling installation by designer Lea Mcintosh; these WHOA!-inducing solar system lollipops from Vintage Confections; and these constellation cards by Nature’s Cubbyhole. (Each one contains an astronomically accurate representation of one of the constellations found in the Northern and Southern hemispheres; the diameter of each star on the card is directly related to that star’s brightness.) We’re also taken with these Ursa Minor-inspired bear cake toppers.

Mood Board #38: Oxford Blue + Amber

This sophisticated, surprisingly pretty palette of beguiling blues, warm ambers, soft golds, and classic taupes is one of our favorites to date. We think this board has a bit of an old-country-manor feel, and the colors are just perfect for fall. We love the blue suede pumps, prettied up with antique Czech amber accents, and the enchanting free-form floral arrangement, which included yellow persimmon branches and porcelain berries.

Mood Board No. 24: All That Glitters

What girl doesn’t love a little shimmer and sparkle? Clean, modern shapes and a minimalist vibe keep glittery gold, blush pink, and icy blue hues from looking too girly-girl or frou-frou. Matte, rosy golds and gold ombre (hello, Maggie Austin’s “Appliqué” cake!) also help to keep the color palette fresh. Pearlescent votives add a cool shimmer. And the star of it all is a glimmering wall display made out of bright white lights and mirror garlands. This would be a perfect backdrop for your bar, dessert table, or DJ booth. It was a DIY project featured on Apartment Therapy, and you can check out all the deets here! We love the painted gold chair and spray-painted billy buttons presented in a simple pink glass bottle set on gold glitter paper in place of linen. Both were part of a styled shoot executed by Kellie Keno and Elissa Keno for Elizabeth Anne Designs’ Inspired Creations contest. Last but not least, we had to include this gold leaf-filled acrylic table, called Table d’Oreé, made in the early ’60s by famous French artist Yves Klein. It’s currently on sale at Artnet. Outrageously expensive and totally unrealistic, we know, but a girl can dream!

Ooh La La: Claire Pettibone’s Fall 2012 Beau Monde Collection

We just got our first glimpse of Claire Pettibone’s Fall 2012 collection, which was inspired by the French countryside, and it’s jaw-droppingly spectacular. As the French would say, “C’est à mourir pour!” The collection features French-patterned bodices, delicate lace overlays, the most breathtaking illusion backs, and a fitting color palette of muted gold, Marie Antoinette blue, and dusty peach. Beautiful world, indeed!

Photos by firstVIEW

Join me for a languid summer in the French countryside. Antique gold, toile, and tapestries inspire the textures and details for the collection. The juxtaposition of gilded refinement and relaxed country living brings Parisian luxury to a rambling garden party in full bloom. An homage to the decadence of 18th-century France, contrasted with the soft breezes of a warm summer night . . . kick off your heels, have a glass of wine, and live! ~ Claire Pettibone

Three Paper Lovelies

1. This clever, minimalistic invite made by Spanish designer Christina Moralejo needs no explanation. It’s a literal representation of tying the knot. The front of the card features the definition of the word knot: a loop that is fastened and locked so it is difficult to release, and the more its ends are pulled apart the more it ties together. We like the teeny line of text on the inside that’s meant to mimic the string’s shadow. This is actually a rather simple design that can be made at home. All you need is a good printer, a method of cutting and scoring paper, a mini hole punch, suitable string, and patience. We like this one best as a save-the-date.

2. Can you believe this laser-cut paper suite for a woodland-themed wedding in historic Nevada City is a DIY creation that cost less than $200? We can’t either. Admittedly, one half of the happy California couple (Christine and Ian) who created this brilliant set is a graphic designer, so they had an unfair advantage. If you’re daring and determined to pull something like this off, however, you can find detailed instructions, as well as a materials guide, on Christine and Ian’s website, a photographic journal of their entire wedding journey. Our favorite elements are the pop-up cutouts, the hand-drawn field guide of local wildlife, and the novel wooden buttons (made by hand) used to tie it all up pretty.

3. This fanciful peacock design was made for New York-based artisan letterpress print shop Bella Figura by London-born designer Kamal, who draws on her Indian heritage—its vibrant colors, fabrics, and motifs—for design inspiration. She sums up her style as follows: “Patterns pulled from the intricate. Simplicity drawn from the complex. Chic wrought from antique. East introduced to West.” A graduate of the renowned Pratt Institute, Kamal is one among a circle of top-notch letterpress artists from whom Bella Figura sources its sophisticated and original letterpress designs. The shop offers both bespoke wedding paper suites and an impressively extensive collection of pre-designed suites encompassing a variety of aesthetics and styles, including formal, text-based, whimsical, pastoral/rural, vintage, and art deco, among others. There’s no cookie-cutterness here, as every suite comes with advanced customization options, a feature that really sets Bella Figura apart from the pack. We love how eco-friendly the shop is, too. It’s 100% wind-powered and carbon neutral. It donates 1% of  its sales to environmental causes, and its tree-free cotton paper, which is made by a 500-year-old European mill, comes from fibers reclaimed from the garment industry.

Mood Board No. 2: Antique Gold + Tiffany Blue

This board is a little Marie Antoinette, a little East Coast country, and a little somewhere we’ve never been but sure want to go. We love all the different textures and elements, including hammered gold flatware, candy ribbons, 1950s gold-brushed potteryware, and an heirloom brooch bouquet that looks like it’s made up of every last little dusted-off treasure from a grandmother’s jewelry box. And if you’re curious about that ribbon-y thingie, it’s an edible gold-dusted cheesecake lollipop! That’s one we haven’t seen before. The charming cake was created by Parisian cake shop Sugarplum for a styled faux wedding shot by globe-trotting wedding photographer extraordinaire Corbin Gurkin. We can’t leave out the delightful invitation (in the lower left corner) that was crafted by the out-of-this-world-talented design duo behind Philadelphia’s Bird & Banner. It’s a letterpressed museum frame that was made for a couple who held their wedding in the gallery space of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
